DC Democratic Party Response to Confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett

Washington, DC — Yesterday, the Senate voted to confirm Amy Coney Barrett as the newest Justice on the Supreme Court, on an almost entirely party-line vote. This rushed confirmation further proves that Republicans are two-timing hypocrites, and we can’t wait to flip the Senate in one short week.

Barrett has promised to strike down the Affordable Care Act, endangering health care coverage for millions of Americans. Her stances on reproductive rights, LGBTQ equality, and countless other issues could take away rights from the most vulnerable populations. In order to ensure that the Court doesn’t fall further and further into conservatism, we must vote blue like never before.

The election is only a week away. If you haven’t already voted, do it as soon as possible. If you haven’t already signed up to volunteer, do it now. Take nothing for granted. Do what you can with the time we have, because it will make a difference. If Trump gets another four years, he could nominate countless more judges, including more Supreme Court Justices. We don’t need any more conservative members of the Supreme Court, that’s for certain.

More than 60 million Americans have already cast their ballots. After claiming four years ago that the Senate could not confirm Merrick Garland hundreds of days before the election, Majority Leader McConnell’s decision to ram through Barrett’s nomination in the month before the election is the definition of hypocrisy. We urge Senate Republicans to remember Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s dying wish that a new justice not be selected until after the election. We hope she haunts them for the rest of their lives.
